Welcome to The EQ
December 15th, 2008 | By David ElkanichSeriously. We’re glad you’re here. Don’t worry, this isn’t going to be long. There are too many issues to write about to spend time drafting our mission statement. And we expect our mission to change over the days, months and (hopefully) years that follow.
Now it’s probably enough that you know we just really enjoy what we do. And those with whom we work. So here we are. Not literally, of course, since Dayna and I (David E.) are in Portland, Mike is in St. Louis and David S. is in Chicago (although David S. really could be anywhere since he is always emailing from his BlackBerry). We are all a bunch of different personalities, so hope you like what you see. Er, read.
Ok, the name. What does it mean? Well, that’s up to you. A quandary is really nothing more than a state of uncertainty or perplexity, sometimes requiring a choice between equally unfavorable options. Who hasn’t been in such a situation before? Lawyers are confronted with questions everyday that implicate our duties under the ethics rules. Some dilemmas may be easier than others, but none are less important. Since we’ve all been in ethical quandaries, the name just made sense. Not to mention that some of us believe life is nothing more than one big ethical quandary.
Which actually reminds me of something that Mike said when we were thinking about this blog. He said that we should tell people that we are ethics lawyers, not necessarily ethical lawyers. We are surely the former, and I hope we can all strive for the latter.
Lastly, before we start posting, we want you to know that we are doing this because we want to add to the discussion of legal ethics. We’re not hear to talk just to talk. My barber recently told me that, while she always cuts good hair, sometimes she doesn’t feel like she is “bringing the awesome.” Our deal to you is that we will always bring the awesome. If not, that’s the day the dilemma has gone on long enough.
David E., David S., Dayna and Mike
